“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” – Coco Chanel
Everyone tells you to be better.
Better leader.
Better company.
Better version of yourself.
Except Better has a problem.
It keeps us looking SIDEWAYS.
What are they doing?
What’s working for them?
How can I do it better?
And before you know it, you’re doing exactly what they’re doing.
Just a little cheaper. And a little better. Congrats.
You’ve become a slightly improved version of someone ELSE.
But here’s the irony.
We spend our lives looking SIDEWAYS at everyone else.
While the people who dare to be Different are the ones we look UP to.
Dolly.
Prince.
Picasso.
You don’t even need their last names.
And you certainly don’t confuse them with anyone else.
And the world couldn’t look away.
Nobody remembers them because they were slightly Better versions of someone else.
They were unmistakably Themselves.
And here’s the problem with being different.
There’s nobody to copy.
No blueprint.
No formula.
No guarantee anyone will understand what the hell you’re doing.
Which is precisely why most people won’t do it.
It’s safer to look SIDEWAYS
But there’s a big difference between winning somone else’s game…
And inventing a game nobody else knows how to play.
Better makes you Competitive
Different makes you Unforgettable .
Dash of Courage
Catch yourself looking Sideways.
At your competitors.
Your colleagues.
Your friends.
The people who seem to have it all figured out.
Then stop asking how to do it better.
And start asking why you’re doing it that way in the first place.
Courage over comfort,
