Brad Cohen barked during job interviews.

Not because he was nervous.

Because he had Tourette Syndrome.

His dream was simple. He wanted to become an elementary school teacher.

Twenty-four schools told him No.

Some principals smiled politely.

Others laughed after he walked out the door.

Twenty four rejections .

Then he walked into one more school.

One principal looked past the disorder and saw something the other’s had missed.

Not an expert.

Not the perfect candidate.

Just someone who genuinely cared about kids.

He got the job.

Years later, Brad was named Georgia’s First Class Teacher of the Year

The same man twenty four schools rejected became one of the best teachers in the entire state. I later became friends with Brad after my business partner, Kevin Scott, introduced us. I even wrote about him in 10 Seconds of Insane Courage .

One of my favorite things about Brad isn’t his resilience.

It’s his humor.

He loves to joke and often says…

“There’s one thing I’ll never do…

Play hide-and-seek.

Because I always lose.”

That’s perspective.

One of my favorite quotes has always been the following:

Amateurs built the Ark.

Experts built the Titanic.

We spend so much of our lives waiting until we’re more qualified.

More experienced. More polished. More ready.

But sometimes the world isn’t looking for the person with the perfect resume.

It’s looking for the person who cares enough to begin.
